Malteses are popular family pets. They belong to the toy group of dogs. Registered with the AKC in 1888, Malteses have always been known as devoted companions and friends. Their miniature size enables them to be both charming lap dogs and good watchdogs when necessary.

Gentle-mannered and affectionate, the Maltese Dog does well in families with older children and with elderly people. If over-pampered, Malteses may turn capricious and demanding. They are family-oriented dogs and require much attention. Malteses are suitable for apartment living and don't need much exercise.

The landmarks of the Maltese Dog are white long coat and deep dark eyes. The luxurious coat may hang low to the ground (approximately 11 inches long) or be clipped rather short for convenience of both the dog and its owner. The Maltese's ears and tail are covered with thick hair. The tail hangs over the back of the dog.
Height: The standard says the Maltese Dog should stand 10 inches in height.
Weight: Standard Maltese weighs 4-6 pounds.
Life Expectancy: 11 years on average.

Malteses - Rescues - History in Brief

The Maltese breed is one of the most ancient. Its history is somewhat vague and debatable. In common opinion, the Maltese's origin is Malta. Indeed, the Maltese is named after the Island of Malta. However, there is an opinion backed up with evidence that the breed similar to the Maltese Dog existed in Greece, ancient Egypt and Rome. Nobility in England had Malteses to warm their beds and add glory to their stately appearance.

Malteses - Rescues - History in the US

There is no unanimous opinion as to where Malteses came to America from. Malteses of the present day are believed to be descendants of the dogs brought to the US from Germany, France, Italy, Great Britain and Canada. Late 1800s is the time when the Maltese breed became known in the US. The number of Malteses registered with the AKC grew from 1888 through the 1950s. In its turn, this resulted in growing popularity of the breed. In the 1990s, over 12,000 Malteses were registered every year. Malteses are frequent show winners in their toy group.
