Malteses - Rescues - Are They Healthy?

Malteses are reckoned a healthy breed. They live into their teens and with proper care may be very animated and playful even when quite old. Some of the health concerns any Maltese owner should be aware of include hydrocephalus, hypoglycemia, patellar luxation, entropion, White Shaker syndrome and dental problems. Before buying a Maltese puppy, find out if it is eye and knee tested and if its parents have any genetic diseases.

Malteses - Rescues - Luxurious Coat

The Maltese's white long single hair does not shed or smell. However, it requires frequent grooming sessions. The Maltese's coat can be shaved, that is removed from all the parts of the dog's body, except for the muzzle and ears. Another option is a puppy cut. In this case, around 1 inch of hair is left all over the body after clipping.

Allowing the Maltese's silky hair to grow means having to maintain it. It may be a bit difficult and time taking, but the result is wonderful, especially, if your Maltese is meant to take part in dog shows.

Malteses - Rescues - with Other Pets

Though Malteses are lively dogs with a good temperament, the combination of their miniature size and brave heart sets them at risk, when other pets are around. There is no unanimous opinion as to how well Malteses mix with other pets. They do well with other pets, if they have been raised together and provided they get a lot of personal attention anyway. A major concern is the fact that Malteses sometimes fail to realize the danger and overestimate their own size.

Malteses do well with older children. As Malteses are small and attention demanding, responsible breeders are unlikely to sell Malteses to families with toddlers.
